What is a Notary?
At one period in Louisiana's history, this state was governed by France;
therefore, the laws covering the duties of notaries public were based on
the Napoleonic Code. Other states are governed by common law doctrine.
Louisiana notaries are highly trained, licensed practitioners, providing a
full range of regulated Legal services. These services my include the ability
to prepare powers of attorney, draft affidavits, notarize loan closings and
many powers that notaries from common law states do not have.
In order to become a notary public, one must pass a very difficult
examination. Once the person passes this exam, he or she receives a
commission as a Notary Public for life.
